The Marriage Bed Is Honorable:
God's Beautiful Design for Sex
"Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled..." — Hebrews 13:4
For three parts, this series has been demolition work — tearing down pornography, breaking the secret habit, pulling down strongholds. But if we stop there, we've only told half the story, and half a gospel is no gospel at all. Because here is the truth the enemy works hardest to hide: God is not against sex. God invented sex. He designed it, blessed it, wrote poetry about it, and called it very good. The devil has never created anything in his existence — he can only counterfeit. And you don't counterfeit worthless things. Nobody forges pennies. The very fury of hell's attack on sexuality is the proof of how precious the original is. So this bonus part is the celebration: not what sex isn't, but what God made it to be.
❖Naked and Not Ashamed: The Original Design
Go back before the fall, before shame ever existed. God forms the woman, brings her to the man like a Father walking His daughter down the aisle, and ordains the first marriage:
"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed."
— Genesis 2:24–25 (KJV)
Naked and not ashamed. That is God's original design — full intimacy, full vulnerability, zero shame. Sexual union was in the world before sin was, which means sex is not a product of the fall; shame is. And when God surveyed everything He had made — including the one-flesh union He had just ordained — His verdict was "very good" (Genesis 1:31). The first command ever given to humanity was "Be fruitful, and multiply" (Genesis 1:28) — a command that, by definition, blesses the marriage bed.
❖God Wrote a Whole Book About It
If you think God is embarrassed by married passion, explain the Song of Solomon — an entire inspired book of the Bible celebrating romantic and physical love between a bridegroom and his bride, in poetry so vivid that generations of religious scholars didn't know what to do with it. "How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! how much better is thy love than wine!" (Song of Solomon 4:10). God didn't hide that book in an appendix. He placed it in the center of Scripture, and Proverbs speaks with the same unblushing voice:
"Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love."
— Proverbs 5:18–19 (KJV)
Ravished is in your Bible. Satisfy thee at all times is in your Bible. And notice where that passage lives: Proverbs 5 is the same chapter that warns against the adulterous woman. God's answer to sexual temptation is not less passion — it is fully enjoyed, covenant-protected passion. Religion says "desire is dirty, suppress it." The Word says "desire is a river — bless the fountain and keep it in its banks" (Proverbs 5:15–17).
✦ The devil's greatest trick was convincing the world that he owns sex and God owns rules. The truth is the exact reverse: God owns the gift, and the devil owns only the theft of it. ✦
❖Honorable and Undefiled — Even After All You've Heard
"Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge."
— Hebrews 13:4 (KJV)
Read that carefully, because many believers — especially those raised where the subject was taboo, or those coming out of the bondage of Parts 1–3 — carry a lie deep in the fortress: "sex is dirty, even in marriage." Some grew up hearing only warnings. Some had the gift stolen or twisted by abuse. Some spent so many years associating sexuality with sin and shame that they cannot flip a switch on their wedding night. Hear the Word of God over every one of those voices: the marriage bed is UNDEFILED. Not tolerated. Not "permitted but suspicious." Honorable. The same verse that judges adultery blesses the covenant bed in the same breath — the fence and the garden in one sentence.
❖Mutual Belonging: The Most Radical Verse in the Bible
Now Paul — writing to a church surrounded by both pagan excess and hyper-spiritual repression — gives the marriage bed its governing law:
"Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife. Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency."
— 1 Corinthians 7:3–5 (KJV)
In a world where wives were property, Paul wrote something revolutionary: the belonging is mutual and equal. The husband's body belongs to his wife just as much as hers to him. Sexual intimacy in marriage is not a favor one spouse grants — it is "due benevolence," a debt of love both owe. And withholding it, Paul warns, is "defrauding" — the only sanctioned pause is mutual consent, temporary, for prayer, and then "come together again," because prolonged deprivation hands Satan an opening. That's not a suggestion; it's spiritual warfare strategy for your marriage. A cold marriage bed is an undefended gate.
❖"So What's Actually Allowed?" — Principles, Not Diagrams
Here's the question people are really asking, the one typed into search engines at midnight: what specifically is permitted between a husband and wife? What about this position, that practice? Let's be honest the way this series has always been honest: the Bible gives no list of approved positions or techniques. Scripture is not a manual of diagrams — and thank God, because a list would have made holiness mechanical. Instead, God gives principles that govern everything the list never could. Within marriage, the Word grants wide freedom — the Song of Solomon is anything but boring — governed by five questions:
- 1. Is it inside the covenant? The one absolute wall: the marriage bed is for the two of you alone. Nothing that imports a third party crosses the line — not another person, and not the digital third parties of pornography or fantasy about others (Matthew 5:28; Hebrews 13:4). If the counterfeit from Parts 1–2 has to be invited in to make the real thing work, the fortress is being rebuilt inside the garden.
- 2. Is it mutual? "The husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife" — the verse cuts both directions (1 Corinthians 7:4). Nothing demanded, nothing coerced, nothing one spouse dreads. Freedom in the marriage bed is bounded by two willing hearts. Pressure is not passion.
- 3. Is it loving? "Charity... seeketh not her own" (1 Corinthians 13:5). The world's sexuality asks "what can I get?" Covenant sexuality asks "how can I delight my spouse?" (Philippians 2:4). Anything degrading, painful, or that treats your spouse as an object rather than a beloved fails this test — even inside marriage, lust can objectify, and love never does.
- 4. Does it violate either conscience? "Whatsoever is not of faith is sin" (Romans 14:23). If one spouse cannot do a thing with a clear conscience before God, love doesn't push — love waits, talks, and prays. Consciences can be discipled by the Word over time, but they must never be bulldozed.
- 5. Does it build the union? The purpose of the marriage bed is one-flesh unity (Genesis 2:24), mutual joy (Proverbs 5:18–19), protection from temptation (1 Corinthians 7:2, 5), and the fruit of children when God grants them (Genesis 1:28). If a practice deepens those, it serves the design. If it isolates, wounds, or divides, it doesn't — no matter how "technically permitted" it is.
Put simply: God built the fence at the covenant line — and inside the fence, He planted a garden. Husband and wife, in mutual love and clear conscience, have liberty to enjoy that garden fully. Where Scripture is silent, the couple decides together before God. That is not a loophole; that is trust — the same trust a Father shows when He gives a good gift and says "enjoy it in love."
❖The Mystery: Why the Enemy Fights This So Hard
One more layer — the deepest one. After quoting Genesis 2:24, Paul pulls back the curtain:
"For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church."
— Ephesians 5:31–32 (KJV)
The one-flesh union is a living picture of the gospel — covenant love, full self-giving, faithful union between Christ and His bride. Now you know why hell wages total war on sexuality. Every counterfeit — porn, adultery, the secret habit — is an attack on the portrait of Christ and the church. And every marriage bed kept honorable is a sermon the enemy cannot silence. When you fight for purity, you're not defending a rule. You're defending a revelation.
❖Rebuilding the Garden After the Counterfeit
A word to the couple recovering from what Parts 1–3 described — where pornography or secret sin has wounded trust and cooled the bed. The garden can be replanted. Be patient with each other: the offended spouse needs time and truth, not pressure (Ephesians 4:32); the recovering spouse needs to keep walking in the light (1 John 1:7). Pray together — the couple that brings God into the bedroom's healing finds that He is not embarrassed to answer. And remember Joel's promise over every devoured thing: "I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten" (Joel 2:25). God restores gardens. It's what He's done since Eden.
✦ Purity was never the destination. Purity is the path. The destination is a love so whole, so free, and so holy that it preaches Christ without a word. ✦
♰ A Prayer of Blessing Over the Marriage Bed ♰
Father, thank You for the gift the enemy tried to convince us was shameful. Thank You that You designed intimacy, blessed it, and called it very good. We renounce every lie that says the marriage bed is dirty, every shadow of shame left over from old bondage, old teaching, or old wounds. Your Word says it is honorable and undefiled — and we agree with Your Word.
Lord, bless our union. Teach us to love as You love — freely, faithfully, each seeking the other's joy. Guard our covenant from every counterfeit and every intruder. Heal what the locust has eaten, rekindle what has grown cold, and make our one-flesh love a living picture of Christ and His church. Naked and not ashamed — that is Your design, and we receive it with thanksgiving. In the beautiful name of Jesus, amen.
If this series has ministered to you, share all four parts — with the captive who needs Parts 1–3, and with the married couple who needs Part 4. The God who breaks chains is the same God who plants gardens.
