Tearing Down Sexual Strongholds:
Identify. Destroy. Walk in Freedom.
"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." — John 8:32
Maybe you've done everything Parts 1 and 2 laid out. You installed the filters. You found an accountability partner. You memorized the verses. And still — after weeks of victory — something pulls you back to the same pit, almost like gravity. If that's you, listen carefully: you are not fighting a habit anymore. You are fighting a fortress. The Bible has a word for it: a stronghold. And here is the good news that changes everything — strongholds were never meant to be managed, coped with, or lived around. Scripture says they are meant to be pulled down.
"(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ."

❖What Is a Stronghold?
In Paul's day, a stronghold was a military fortress — thick walls, high towers, built to withstand a siege. Spiritually, a stronghold is a fortified system of lies that has become a fortress in your mind. Look at the anatomy Paul gives: "imaginations" (arguments, reasonings) and "every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God." A stronghold is a place in your thinking where a lie has been believed so long, and reinforced so many times, that it now stands taller in your mind than what God has said.
That's why behavior-only strategies eventually crumble. You can chain the behavior all you want — if the fortress in the mind still stands, the behavior finds its way home. "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he" (Proverbs 23:7). A man who believes in his heart "I am an addict and I always will be" will live like one no matter how many filters he installs. The battle is won or lost at the level of what you believe.

❖How Strongholds Get Built
No fortress appears overnight. Strongholds are constructed, brick by brick, and knowing the construction reveals the demolition:
- Open doors. "Neither give place to the devil" (Ephesians 4:27). The word "place" is topos — territory, a foothold. Every willful compromise hands over ground: the first exposure, the browsing "just to see," the entertainment saturated with sensuality. The enemy cannot build where he has not been given land.
- Repetition. Sin repeated becomes sin rehearsed; sin rehearsed becomes reflex. "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey?" (Romans 6:16). Every repetition lays another brick and deepens the rut until the wagon steers itself.
- Agreements with lies. This is the mortar between the bricks. "This is just who I am." "I've already fallen, might as well finish." "God is tired of forgiving me." "I need this to cope." Each time you nod along with a lie, you sign a contract with the father of lies (John 8:44) — and he enforces his contracts.
- Unhealed wounds. Many sexual strongholds are built on old ground: abuse, abandonment, rejection, things seen too young. The enemy is a scavenger — he builds fortresses on ruins. This is why some captives need more than willpower; they need the One who was sent "to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives... to set at liberty them that are bruised" (Luke 4:18).
❖Step One: Identify — Drag the Lies Into the Light
You cannot demolish what you cannot see. So pray the dangerous prayer: "Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting" (Psalm 139:23–24). Ask the Holy Spirit to expose the specific lies holding your fortress up. Here are the most common ones — and the truth that breaks them:

Write down the exact sentences that run through your mind before, during, and after the fall. Those sentences are the walls of your fortress. Now you know what you're aiming at.
❖Step Two: Destroy — The Weapons That Actually Work
Paul says our weapons are "not carnal, but mighty through God." Carnal weapons — white-knuckling, vague resolutions, self-hatred — bounce off fortress walls. These do not:
- 1. The blood and the cross. Before you swing a single blow, know this: the decisive battle is already won. "And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it" (Colossians 2:15). The cross disarmed your enemy. You do not fight FOR victory — you fight FROM victory. Every accusation he raises was nailed to the cross (Colossians 2:14).
- 2. The spoken Word. When Jesus faced the tempter, He didn't reason with him or rely on silent willpower — He spoke Scripture out loud: "It is written... It is written... It is written" (Matthew 4:4–10). The Word is "the sword of the Spirit" (Ephesians 6:17), and a sword left in its sheath demolishes nothing. Take the truth column from the table above and declare it out loud when the lie whispers. Fortresses fall to spoken truth.
- 3. Renounce the agreements. Contracts made with lies must be canceled out loud. Confess the sin specifically (1 John 1:9), then renounce the lie by name: "I renounce the lie that this is who I am. I am a new creature in Christ." "We have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty" (2 Corinthians 4:2). This is how you take back the topos — the ground.
- 4. Submit, then resist. "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" (James 4:7). The order is everything. Resistance without submission is a self-help program; submission without resistance is surrender. A heart fully yielded to God carries an authority hell recognizes (Luke 10:19).
- 5. Prayer and fasting. Some fortresses have deep foundations. Jesus said of a certain stubborn kind of bondage, "This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting" (Mark 9:29). Fasting is not earning God's power — it's starving the flesh's throne so the Spirit's throne stands alone. It tells your body, in a language it understands, who is no longer in charge.
- 6. The blood, your testimony, and a fearless heart. "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death" (Revelation 12:11). Your testimony — spoken to a brother, a group, a church — is a weapon. Every time you tell what God has delivered you from, you drive the rubble of your old fortress deeper into the ground.
❖Step Three: Fill the House — Or the Fortress Rebuilds
Here is the warning almost nobody preaches. Jesus described what happens when a captive is set free but leaves the house empty:
"When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself... and the last state of that man is worse than the first."

Swept and garnished — but empty. That is the story of every man who quit the sin but never replaced it with God. Deliverance that stops at demolition ends in a worse captivity. The fortress of lies must be replaced with a temple of truth: daily Word instead of daily feeds, worship in the empty hours, service that turns your eyes outward, brotherhood that keeps you in the light. "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21). Freedom is not an empty house — freedom is a full one.
❖Walk in Freedom — And Guard It
"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage" (Galatians 5:1). Notice: freedom must be stood in. The enemy will circle back to test whether the ground he lost is really held. So put the armor on daily — the belt of truth first, because every stronghold began with a lie (Ephesians 6:13–17). Keep your confession current. Keep your brothers close. Keep your house full.
And if the old fortress whispers your name some tired night, answer it with the anthem of this whole series: "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be FREE INDEED" (John 8:36). Not partially free. Not free until Friday. Free indeed — because the Freedom-Giver Himself lives in you.
✦ You were not created to be a slave. Identify the lie. Destroy the fortress. Fill the house. And walk — head high, chains behind you — in the liberty of the sons of God. ✦
♰ A Prayer of Demolition ♰
Father, in the name of Jesus, I come as a son, not a slave. I thank You that the cross has already disarmed every power that held me. Holy Spirit, search me — expose every lie I have believed, every agreement I have made with the enemy, every door I have left open. I confess my sin specifically and completely, and I receive Your cleansing blood.
Right now I renounce every lie that built this fortress: the lie that I cannot change, the lie that You are done with me, the lie that this sin is who I am. I cancel every agreement in Jesus' name and I take back the ground. I declare Your Word over my mind: I am a new creature; old things are passed away. Sin shall not have dominion over me.
Lord, don't leave my house empty — fill it. Fill me with Your Spirit, Your Word, Your fire, until there is no vacancy for the enemy to return to. I put on the whole armor of God, and I will stand fast in the liberty of Christ. The Son has made me free, and I am free indeed. Amen and amen.
