Can You Hear Him?
How God Speaks to His People
A guide for every believer who longs to hear the voice of the Living God — and how to recognize it when He speaks.
📖 "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." — John 10:27God is not silent. He never has been. From the beginning of time, the Creator of heaven and earth has been a speaking God — calling out to Adam in the garden, whispering to Elijah in a cave, thundering from Mount Sinai, and breathing through every page of His Holy Word. The great question is not whether God speaks — it is whether we are positioned to hear Him. This post unpacks the primary ways God communicates with His children and how you can cultivate a listening heart.
Through His Word — The Bible
The most foundational, reliable, and primary way God speaks is through Scripture. Every word is God-breathed, living, and active — capable of cutting through to the deepest places of the human soul. When you open the Bible with a hungry heart, God speaks directly to you.
"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness."
"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword... discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."
Through the Holy Spirit
Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would be our Counselor, Teacher, and Guide into all truth. The Spirit communicates through an inner witness — a deep conviction, a prompting, a sense of peace or restraint that goes beyond human reasoning. Learning to distinguish the Spirit's voice from your own thoughts is one of the most important disciplines of the Christian life.
"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth... and he will declare to you the things that are to come."
"The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God."
Through Prayer — The Two-Way Conversation
Prayer is not a monologue — it is a dialogue. Many believers talk to God but never stop to listen. True prayer involves silence, stillness, and expectation. When we quiet our hearts before Him, God responds — not always audibly, but through thoughts that carry His weight, His peace, and His character.
"Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known."
"Be still, and know that I am God."
Through Dreams & Visions
Throughout Scripture, God used dreams and visions to communicate His will — from Joseph to Daniel to the Apostle Peter. In the New Covenant age, the prophet Joel's words are fulfilled: God pours out His Spirit and His people see visions and dream dreams. God can speak powerfully through the night watch.
"Your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions."
"If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream."
Through Other Believers
God speaks through the Body of Christ — through pastors, mentors, brothers and sisters in the faith who speak into your life with wisdom, prophecy, or Spirit-filled counsel. This is why community and accountability are not optional. God uses human voices He has anointed to deliver His message to you.
"Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety."
"The one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation."
Through Circumstances & Providence
God is sovereign over every detail of your life. Open and closed doors, seasons of struggle, supernatural provision, divine appointments — God orchestrates circumstances to redirect, correct, confirm, and guide His people. Learn to read His handwriting in your story.
"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."
"The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps."
Through Worship & Praise
There is a supernatural dynamic that occurs in true, Spirit-filled worship — God inhabits the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3). In worship, our spiritual ears are tuned, our walls come down, and the voice of God becomes clearer. Many believers have received their most profound encounters with God in the middle of sincere worship.
"Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel."
"The Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel... And he said, 'Listen, all Judah... Thus says the Lord to you: Do not be afraid...'"
After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.— 1 Kings 19:11–12 · God speaks in the still small voice
🚧 Why Some Struggle to Hear God
Unconfessed Sin Creates Distance
Isaiah 59:2 declares: "Your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God." Sin does not silence God — but it can block our ability to receive. Repentance reopens the channel.
Noise & Distraction
A life filled with constant media, busyness, and noise leaves no room for the still, small voice. Elijah had to leave the noise of ministry before he could hear God (1 Kings 19). Fasting and silence are spiritual disciplines for a reason.
Lack of Scriptural Foundation
God will never speak something that contradicts His Word. If you don't know the Bible deeply, you cannot test what you hear (1 John 4:1). The Word is the measuring rod for every voice.
Fear & Unbelief
Hebrews 11:6 says it is impossible to please God without faith. Fear tells us God won't speak to "someone like me." But Jesus said His sheep know His voice — that includes you (John 10:27).
🕊️ A Prayer to Open Your Ears
If your heart is hungry to hear God more clearly, begin with this simple, honest prayer. God responds to sincerity, not eloquence.
"Lord, I come before You with open hands and an open heart. Forgive me for the moments I have been too busy, too distracted, or too fearful to listen. I believe You are a speaking God, and I am Your sheep. Tune my ears to Your voice. Speak through Your Word, Your Spirit, and every channel You choose. I surrender my will, my agenda, and my noise to You. Speak, Lord — for Your servant is listening."
— Based on 1 Samuel 3:10
