Walking in Divine Authority: Casting Out Demons According to God's Word
Walking in Divine Authority:
Casting Out Demons
According to God's Word
Understanding the power and authority God has given to every believer through Jesus Christ
And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues…
— Mark 16:17
The Reality of Demonic Activity
Before we can walk in authority, we must first accept what Scripture plainly teaches: demonic spirits are real, they are active in the world today, and they can oppress — and in some cases afflict — human beings. The Bible does not treat this as mythology. Jesus, the Son of God Himself, confronted and cast out evil spirits throughout His earthly ministry. If the Son of God took demonic activity seriously, so must we.
“When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.”
Matthew 8:16The Greek word used for casting out demons — ekballō — means to forcefully expel, throw out, or drive away. This is not a suggestion or a negotiation. It is an act of divine authority exercised over a defeated enemy.
“The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work.”
1 John 3:8The Source of All Authority: Jesus Christ
This is the foundational truth upon which everything else rests. You do not have authority over demons because of your own goodness, your church membership, or the number of years you have been a Christian. The authority belongs entirely to Jesus — and you exercise it in His name and by His delegated power.
“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.’”
Matthew 28:18“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.”
Philippians 2:9–10Every demon, every principality, every dark power in the spiritual realm is already beneath the feet of Jesus Christ. When you stand in His name, you stand on that same victory. This is not pride — it is covenant truth.
The cross was not just a sacrifice for sin — it was a decisive, public defeat of Satan and all his powers. Colossians 2:15 declares that Jesus “disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” The enemy is already a conquered foe.
The Authority Delegated to Believers
Jesus did not keep this authority to Himself. He deliberately and formally delegated it to His followers. This is one of the most extraordinary realities in the entire Bible: God shares His authority over the enemy with ordinary men and women who believe in His Son.
“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”
Luke 10:19Notice what Jesus said: I have given you authority. It is already given. It is not something you must earn, beg for, or wait years to receive. The moment you are in Christ, you are clothed with His authority. The question is whether you will walk in it.
“And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues.”
Mark 16:17Mark 16:17 does not say “these signs will accompany apostles” or “these signs will accompany specially trained clergy.” It says those who believe. If you believe in Jesus Christ, this commission belongs to you.
Conditions for Walking in This Authority
While the authority is freely given, Scripture reveals certain spiritual conditions that determine whether a believer will walk in it effectively. This is where many people fall short — not because God withholds from them, but because of gaps in their own walk with God.
- Genuine Salvation and Relationship with Christ The authority comes from being in Christ. The seven sons of Sceva tried to use Jesus' name without a personal relationship with Him — and the demon overpowered them. “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” (Acts 19:15). Being born again is non-negotiable.
- A Life of Holiness and Repentance Unconfessed sin creates open doors for the enemy and weakens your spiritual authority. The power of God flows through clean vessels. “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” (Psalm 66:18).
- Prayer and Fasting Jesus taught that some deliverances require deeper spiritual preparation. When the disciples failed, Jesus said: “This kind can come out only by prayer.” (Mark 9:29). A strong, consistent prayer life is not optional for those moving in deliverance ministry.
- Faith — Unwavering Confidence in God's Word “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.” (Matthew 17:20). Doubt is the enemy of authority.
- The Full Armor of God “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.” (Ephesians 6:11). Truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God are your spiritual protection.
How to Cast Out Demons: What the Bible Shows Us
Jesus and the early apostles left us a clear pattern. Casting out demons is not about elaborate rituals or dramatic performances. It is a calm, authoritative, faith-filled command issued in the name of Jesus Christ to a defeated spiritual enemy.
“He rebuked the impure spirit. ‘Be quiet!’ said Jesus sternly. ‘Come out of him!’ The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.”
Mark 1:25–26Jesus did not plead with demons. He did not debate them. He gave a direct, authoritative command: “Come out.” He spoke to them as a supreme commander speaks to a conquered enemy. This is the model for Spirit-filled believers operating in Christ's delegated authority.
“Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, ‘In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!’ At that moment the spirit left her.”
Acts 16:18“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
James 4:7This verse reveals the divine sequence: first submit to God, then resist the devil. When both conditions are met, the promise is absolute — he will flee.
Speaking to Demons: What Is Appropriate?
Many believers wonder: is it right to speak directly to demons at all? The answer from Scripture is yes — but with important guardrails. Jesus spoke to them, rebuked them, and commanded them. But the conversation should be brief, purposeful, and commanding — not lengthy dialogue or interrogation.
⚠️ Biblical Caution
Do not engage in lengthy dialogue with demons. Do not be drawn into debates. Jude 1:9 warns that even the archangel Michael said only, “The Lord rebuke you!” Rely on God's power, not your own wits. The goal is always the same: command it to leave in Jesus' name, and forbid it to return.
“When an impure spirit comes out of a person… it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there.”
Luke 11:24–26Casting a demon out is only half the work. The person delivered must fill that space with the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, genuine repentance, and Christian community — or they remain vulnerable to the enemy's return.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
You cannot walk in true authority over demonic spirits in your own strength. The Holy Spirit is not a supplement to your ministry — He is the very source of it. It was by the Spirit that Jesus cast out demons, and it is by that same Spirit that believers are empowered today.
“But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”
Matthew 12:28“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.”
Acts 1:8“To one there is given through the Spirit… distinguishing between spirits.” (1 Corinthians 12:8,10). The gift of discerning of spirits allows a believer to identify demonic activity accurately. Pray for it. Exercise it. Let the Holy Spirit lead every encounter with spiritual darkness.
Practical Steps to Prepare for Deliverance Ministry
If God is calling you to move in this dimension of ministry, here is a biblical framework for preparation. Authority is not claimed overnight — it is cultivated through a life surrendered to God.
- Be Born Again and Spirit-Filled Your life must be built on genuine faith in Jesus Christ. Receive the Holy Spirit and cultivate that relationship daily.
- Saturate Yourself in Scripture “The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword.” (Hebrews 4:12). Know God's Word. Speak it in faith. The sword of the Spirit is your primary offensive weapon.
- Build a Consistent Prayer Life Pray in the Spirit. Fast regularly. Intercede. Authority flows from intimacy with God, not from technique.
- Walk in Forgiveness and Humility Bitterness, pride, and unforgiveness are footholds for the enemy. Close every open door in your own life before attempting to bring deliverance to others.
- Do Not Minister Alone Jesus sent the disciples out two by two (Luke 10:1). Deliverance ministry is best done in community, under accountability, and with the covering of spiritual leadership.
- Always Give the Glory to God “Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:20). Keep your heart humble and your eyes on the Savior.
Stand Firm, Believer
You are not a helpless victim in a spiritual war already won. You are a child of the King, clothed in His authority, sealed by His Spirit, and commissioned to advance His Kingdom against the gates of hell — which shall not prevail.
“Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” — Ephesians 6:10
